🏝️ DIGITAL NOMADS
Borderless living and work from anywhere.
I sat down with my friend Ali Abdaal for a long chat about all things digital nomads, remote work, internet countries, Global Natives, Plumia, SafetyWing, and more. Watch this space for updates on me and Ali's adventures as he experiments with the nomad lifestyle for the first time over the next year. (via Deep Dive with Ali Abdaal)
There's tons of bureaucracy for remote workers to navigate when interacting with traditional nation-states, and finding the right structure can be a real headache. If you're considering Estonia for your residency and taxes—one of the world's most advanced digital nations—here's your need-to-know in the latest of SafetyWing's nomad tax guides. 🌍 GLOBAL MOBILITY
Travel and the free movement of people.
Balaji Srinivasan's much-anticipated book on internet countries launched last week, and it's an absolute banger of ideas, foresight, signals, and possibilities. If you're short on time, there's an audiobook version coming soon, and until then, there's also a TLDR in a sentence, an image, 1,000 words, an essay or a series of tweets. (via Balaji Srinivasan)
The first network states are already being made, and as a Counterflows reader, you're probably aware of that by now. While the Plumia team and I pursue our mission of building an internet country for digital nomads, the Afropolitan crew just raised investment to work on an internet country for Africans and the African diaspora. 💻 REMOTE WORK
Tips and insights for the new era of work.
A shopping boom in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighbourhood is the latest sign that remote work is helping to revitalise retail real estate in New York City’s residential areas, as more people spend closer to home. (via WSJ)
If you're looking for your next career move, this list of the best sites and platforms to find remote jobs will definitely come in handy. Made with love and "we've been there" vibes by my talented colleagues at SafetyWing. (via Building Remotely)
💡 IDEAS & CULTURE
Smart thinking for creatives and knowledge workers.
An ideas machine is “a network of operators, thinkers, and funders, centred around an ideology, that’s designed to turn ideas into outcomes.” This post deep dives into the many internet subcultures that are playing with this concept, from progress studies to crypto public goods, with an emphasis on the Effective Altruism movement. A group of social scientists explored the impact that living abroad has on our sense of self. Essentially, they found that those who base in another country for at least three months seem to experience greater clarity in terms of who they are and how they've perceived by other people. Makes for a strong argument in favour of nomading as a self-actualisation hack. (via HBR)
