Hi friends 👋
Last week, I started hosting a series of live conversations about the future of technology, democracy, and citizenship for Plumia, the nomad internet country project I’m involved with.
The first one got a little salty: I interviewed Andrew Keen, who describes himself as “amongst the world's best known and controversial commentators on the digital revolution”. (I’d not heard of the guy before, and the term ‘digital revolution’ makes me queasy—but, you know, my role is just to show up, hang out, and ask questions.)
Mr. Keen, it turns out, objects to the fundamental idea of the nomad lifestyle. He believes people should stay where they’re born. He denies there’s anyone who looks at the world like a nomad does. Essentially, he argues, social and political participation is only right in your country of origin.
It was a lively and interesting debate, soured only by his tendency to shout over me when I said something he didn’t like. The privileges of being a young, mixed-race, global woman, eh? No matter the occasion, there’s always an old white dude available to tell you to sit down and shut up.
In the next event, happening later today, I’ll discuss international arbitration with the lawyer Sophie Nappert. Then, next week, I’ll connect with activist Santiago Siri for a dive into liquid democracy and decentralised education.
See a list of all the upcoming sessions and register to attend here.
